Fall Planting on the Farm, Distillate Dialed In at the Lab

The ranch enters fall planting bigger and closer to OCal certification than ever, while the lab turns first-harvest material into some of the best oil we've run. Here's the update, field to fraction.

New genetics for the fall run

This fall's planting brings many new flavors to the ranch and a strain lineup teaser is coming soon.

Canopy grows to about 100 acres

SCR started the year at 65 planted acres, added 10 in the spring, and the newly prepped back field adds roughly 20 more. That brings fall planting to about 100 acres, with furrows cut, irrigation installed, and field prep complete. It's another step in the ranch's build toward its full 180-acre permit.

Working toward OCal certification

SCR is pursuing OCal, California's organic standard for cannabis. The ground has organic history, it grew certified organic wheat decades ago, and today's program carries the same philosophy: organic feeding, organic foliar sprays, organic practices across the ranch.

02In The Lab

Distillate, dialed in at 95%

Spring material is arriving from SCR at around 20,000-24,000 pounds a week, and the distillate line is ready for it. Recent runs are consistently testing at 95% THC and non-detect for pesticides. Getting there was the whole crew's project: grind size, packing weight, moisture levels, and machine temps, every variable adjusted run over run until the output is what's in the jars now: clear, golden, non-detect oil.

Piatella samples are ready

The solventless team has spent weeks refining our Piatella process, and the first samples are ready for buyers who want a look. Piatella is cold-cured hash aged in slabs for weeks rather than days. The long, cold cure develops a soft, creamy texture and a depth of aroma that faster processes can't reach.

Where it fits: Piatella is a top-shelf dab product first, the kind of fraction connoisseur menus are built around. It also works as the premium anchor in a solventless line, as the headline ingredient in limited-run collaborations, and as a halo drop that brings attention to everything else on a brand's menu. The selling points are simple: solventless process, small batches, long cure, and a texture and flavor profile that stands apart on a shelf full of rosin. Runs are small by nature, so early interest gets first access.

03The Back Forty

Not everything on a working ranch fits under a headline. Here's the news from the far corner of the property.

The owls are getting an upgrade

Two new owl boxes are going up on the property, purpose-built homes for the barn owls that already patrol the ranch at night. They're the best pest control we've ever had and they work for free, so we're building them better housing. An owl cam is in the works too, so eventually you'll be able to check in on the newest residents of SCR yourself.

Steak, straight from the ranch

A beef program is in the works for our partners and employees: organic, pasture-raised steak straight from SCR. The cattle already handle groundskeeping on the parts of the ranch the plants don't use. Soon they'll be feeding the people who work it, too.

Last harvest, still glowing

The previous harvest is the material fueling the distillate line right now, and it left us with some souvenirs: a few nights when our media guy pointed his camera up between rows. Enjoy the starscapes. The plants are gone, the sky stays.
